Removing old grout is an essential part of replacing a damaged tile or to revamp the look of your bathroom. This can be a tough, tedious chore and for most tradespeople and DIYers, most of their time and effort that goes into bathroom renovations is spent regrouting tiles. When grout dries it forms into a hard, dense material so you need to work vigorously to remove it. This can make reaching into tight spaces quite challenging, especially when you’re left with stubborn areas that requires further work. However, SMART have developed a multi-tool accessory to make grout removal in tight spaces a lot easier – the Carbide Finger Rasp.
The Carbide Finger Rasp is a 38mm multi-tool blade that’s suitable for grout, plaster, adhesive and more. Using this blade for grout removal is perfect for mosaic tiles and tight spaces thanks to its small triangular shape. This allows you to carefully remove grout in awkward areas that could be challenging with other alternatives that are better suited for larger areas. Therefore, the size and shape of this blade is excellent for detailed work. Alternatively, if you’re looking to clean back some areas of leftover grout this is ultimate solution for quick and effective removal.
Other alternatives to using a multi-tool for grout removal are grout rakes and tile adhesive scrapers. Although these are suitable tools, they’re much more labour intensive compared to the Carbide Finger Rasp blade. Not only will these tools require a thorough amount of pressure to achieve results, working on detailed areas can be difficult. Especially when using a tile adhesive scraper as its large surface makes working with mosaic style tiles and tight spaces exceptionally challenging. However, the Carbide Finger Rasp is designed to easily reach tight corners and spaces. By using this blade, you’ll achieve impeccable results quicker than any other manual tool.
When you’re ready to begin using your multi-tool, attach the Carbide Finger Rasp to your multi-tool.
2. Begin the grout removal
Once the blade is attached to your multi-tool, begin to remove the grout in the required areas. Be sure to apply light pressure throughout to prevent damage to any existing tiles.
Top tip: If the blade gets a little dull clean it with white spirit to replenish the edge.
