How to cut a hole for socket boxes

Posted 4 Mar 2022

Cutting out and fitting socket boxes in plasterboard is a daily job for a sparky, but it can sometimes be a struggle without the right tool. Cut the hole too small and you have to recut it. Cut it too big and you’ve got another problem on your hands! Fortunately, SMART have developed the 63mm Purple Series Bi-Metal blade that’s perfect for achieving fast, accurate cuts in plasterboard.

What is the 63mm Purple Series Bi-Metal Blade?

Part of the award-winning Purple Series multi-tool blade range, this blade has been specifically designed to give the very best, all round, long-life cut. This high-performance blade is designed to effectively cut a range of materials, including plasterboard, timber and non-ferrous metals. When it comes to cutting out for socket boxes, the 63mm Bi-Metal blade is the ideal tool as the thin blade allows you to create clean, accurate cuts that would typically be a struggle if using a standard hand tool.

Almost all construction projects require socket box holes, but electricians currently create them with handsaws which is time consuming and sometimes inaccurate. For example, a standard hand pad saw will achieve far less neater cuts which can damage the surrounding area if the edges are too ragged. Plus, pad saws can be fiddly to manoeuvre which doesn’t provide much control. Therefore, greatly increasing the risk of cutting oversized holes.

However, the 63mm Bi-Metal blade is the quickest and most effective tool when cutting out for socket boxes, allowing you to achieve fast and accurate cuts in half the time.

How to cut out for socket boxes

1. Mark the outline

Draw a guide by tracing the outline of the electrical box on the wall. Use a spirit level to ensure the socket box is level.

2. Attach the blade to the multi-tool

Once you’re ready to make your cut, attach the SMART 63mm Bi-Metal blade to your multi-tool.

3. Make the cut

Starting on one end, begin cutting through the plasterboard and follow the outline you have drawn.
