Prepare tiles for grouting

Posted 26 Oct 2022

The quality of the grouting process can be the make or break of any tiling process. Good and effective grouting is especially important when working on outdoor projects like tiling terraces and patios. Failing to put the work in here could result in unnecessary damage over time when left to the elements. This will mean the grouting process will have to be repeated.

When tiles and materials have been compactly laid and the gaps between them are very small, grouting can become challenging. If the gap available for grouting is too tight, the materials may force the grout to fall out. This means wasted time and effort. In a world where time is money, a quicker solution would be to grind down the tiles, widening the gap. Built just for scenarios like this, the SMART 85mm Super Thin Diamond Blade is the perfect solution.

What is the Super Thin Diamond Blade?

The SMART 85mm Super Thin Diamond Blade is a diamond segment multi-tool blade designed for quick and precise grinding. The diamond coating is specifically engineered to deliver detailed cuts in ceramic tiles. When in action, the grinding effect is extremely effective at removing grout, plaster, and more.  As part of the SMART Trade Series, the blade has a universal open-back fitment. The 85mm blade has a cutting depth of 18mm and is the ideal attachment for anyone working tiling and grouting.

How do I prepare trim tiles ready for grouting?

1. Assess how much material you need to remove

You are looking to widen the gap. When working with patios and flooring, allow up to a 6mm gap between tiles for grouting. If working on wall tiles, the ideal gap size is between 1-3mm.

2. Attach the Super Thin Diamond Blade

Snap your attachment to your multi-tool.

3. Grind away at the area you wish to apply grout.

Keep steady as you grind away the necessary material. This will allow you to carefully control how much you remove from the joint.

4. Remove the excess material

Once you have ground away enough material, remove the excess and dust that has been created. This will ensure you have a clean start once you begin grouting.

Extra tip: Keep the multi-tool equipped with the Super Thin Diamond Blade. It is perfect for grinding grout away so you can clean up and fix any issues after grouting.

Reminder – Always wear the correct PPE when operating a multi-tool.
