How to sand using a multi-tool

Posted 24 Feb 2022

Sanding is an essential task to achieving a nice smooth finish on your material. It’s one of the most important steps in determining the end finish and quality of a project. However, a lot of people aren’t aware that you can purchase sanding attachments for multi-tools. So, there’s no need to waste time achieving minimal results from a small detail sander as SMART have developed a Complete Sanding Kit for your multi-tool.

What is the Complete Sanding Kit?

SMART have developed a useful 93mm sanding attachment kit that includes a backing pad and pack of 31 assorted  sanding sheets. Whether you need to smooth the surface of wood, polish fibreglass or prepare an area before painting, our handy multi-tool accessory is universal on practically any surface! With a triangular shape, our design allows you to easily sand into corners and intricate areas. Of course, the sanding tool you use depends on the result you’d like to achieve. However, if you’re working on a smaller project and don’t like gathering lots of tools, our sanding kit makes an excellent substitute for a small detail sander.

How to use a multi-tool sanding attachment

1. Secure the sanding attachment

Using the SMART Complete Sanding Kit, secure the attachment to your multi-tool. How you position it depends on the result you’re looking to achieve and how it suits you.

2. Attach the sanding pad

Choose your required sanding sheet with the desired grit size, and once you’ve aligned this to your sanding attachment, firmly press the sanding pad to the attachment, securing it with the hook and loop backing.

3. Start slow

Begin sanding the material on a low setting whilst applying a light but even pressure. This will ensure you attain a smooth and even finish. As you progress, you’ll likely find you need to increase the speed of your multi-tool, so use your best judgement as being too hasty can leave visible scratches in the material.

Top tip: Know when to stop! Be careful not to over sand a single area to prevent the material from becoming uneven and distorted.
